At the time, Shatner was famously oblivious to how hilarious it all was, which only added to the hilarity. For instance, in the liner notes to his 1968 album, "Transformed Man" (which included his famous "Lucy in the Sky w/Diamonds" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" covers), he recounts the first time he hears it as a transcendent experience that deeply moved him, which makes it even funnier. However, in recent years, he has become aware of what a joke the whole thing really is, as his most recent album is actually intentionally funny. The man has become a walking parody of himself, and he can now do just about anything, and it'll be funny.
