Heading out
Well, I leave for Lazy F today. That will be good. It also probably means that updates will be sporadic at best from now on.
Last night, I went to the Hillside student play, 1,001 Arabian Nights. It was pretty decent. Ethan was doing the music again this year, and he just keeps getting better and better at it. Kalan and Noel were two of the main actors, and as usual performed quite well. The play itself, though, was somewhat lacking in weight. I would not have brought it up were it not for Noel himself commenting that he didn't get the "wow-I-just-kicked-some-serious-ass-tonight-and-brought-down-the-house" feeling when the play was over. There was little to no dialogue, with every character narrating the course of events. I'm not saying that there is anything intrinsically wrong about this sort of set-up, but rather that it isn't quite to my tastes. It lends the whole piece a sort of surreal and detatched air to the proceedings that sometimes alienates the audience from the proceedings. This detatchment had nothing to do with the quality of the performers (which was quite excellent in the main), but was rather due to the material being performed. After the performance, Ethan, Noel and I went out to dinner at IHOP on the Av. While we were cruising the Av, a pay-phone rang. Somewhat perplexed by this, Ethan answered it, to hear a guy saying he was trapped in Kim Bo's Korean restaurant across the street, a dollar short on his bill and unable to leave until fully paying. Ethan, that eternally civic-minded individual, decided to go to the rescue. I figured it could be some sort of prank, but what the hell? Nothing to lose, really. The three of us burst into the restaurant like three avenging angels bent on paying the debt of a hapless diner...only to find a somewhat perplexed and bemused Korean family closing up shop for an evening. "Dude," I said, "I think someone's yanking our chain." This was rapidly becoming evident to Ethan, who then proceeded to explain to the proprietors of the restaurant just exactly why we were there. This took some doing, but when he finally made it clear, all present had a hearty laugh, and we were on our way. We got to IHOP, and ate burgers and harangued the waitress, who started it. After shooting the breeze for a bit, I dropped them off at their home, and drove home.
