Anthony Flew

For those of you not in the know (or who haven't been reading my comments), Anthony Flew has been one of the foremost philosophical proponents of atheism. Recently, he pulled a (Hilary) Putnam and announced that he had become a deist. The question remains: will Flew convert to full-on Christianity? I bet any of my readers a case of beer that he won't. Zemke won't take the bet, so I'm looking for anyone who will. We're only betting on a man's immortal soul (okay, that's a whole other can of worms), here people! Any takers?

As explained in "Guys and Dolls," this is a sucker bet, that is, one that anybody who bets against you is sure to loose. My assessment is that Flew will face increasing criticism from the atheistic establishment and will recant. Would you take that bet. Maybe he and Putnam will marry and skip down the waffle road together?!? Will you take that bet? Explicitly, I wager a pitcher of beer that Flew will recant his deism before he dies and go back to atheism. Z

However, we all know that Lewis moved from atheism to deism to Christianity, so its not impossible. We also know that Lewis wasn't a well known atheist. But I would have to agree that this is a sucker bet, and I sure don't want anything in my ear. I'm curious, however, what caused his shift to deism.

I went and found a link to a story about Flew. It isn't very enlightening, but it may help a bit. http://www.secweb.org/asset.asp?AssetID=369

You watch musicals, Z? Weird. And yes, I confess, it is a sucker bet. That's the only kind of bet I post. I'm a coward that way. Alasdair MacIntyre also made the shift, let us not forget, and he broke up the Beatles (indirectly, at least, if Keith is to be believed on this). A shift to deism is less likely to cause a huge uproar than if he went to full-blooded Christianity. Tell you what Z, I'll take your bet. That at least sounds like it could go either way. And either way, I win, because I get to have a pitcher of beer. So yes, I will take that wager, saying that Flew won't totally Hil out and recant before he dies.
